About the gold price

Gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1034768 grams). Retail buyers usually see prices per gram or per kilo, and jewellery prices depend on purity: 24K is essentially pure, 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58.3%.

The most-watched benchmark is the LBMA Gold Price, set twice daily in London; spot quotes trade continuously in the interbank market. MarketsGrid labels which one you are looking at and how fresh it is.

What moves the gold price

Gold pays no interest, so its opportunity cost is set by real (inflation-adjusted) yields: when real yields fall, gold tends to rise, and vice versa. Because it is priced in dollars, a weaker dollar generally lifts the price for non-US buyers and supports demand.

On the demand side, jewellery (led by China), central-bank purchases, bars and coins, and ETF holdings dominate; mine supply changes only slowly from year to year, so demand shifts and investor positioning drive most short-term moves. Periods of financial stress, currency weakness or geopolitical risk often bring safe-haven buying.

How to read the numbers on this page

The headline price shows its data type: a live spot quote from a licensed feed, a daily benchmark, or the monthly average reference price from the World Bank when nothing fresher is available. Daily change is measured against the previous observation of the same data type.

Returns, drawdowns and volatility are computed from MarketsGrid's stored history, which runs monthly from 1960 and daily where a daily source exists. Long-horizon comparisons therefore mix monthly and daily points; the chart footer states which applies.

Frequently asked

How is the gold price per gram calculated?
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1034768. For an alloy, multiply by its fineness: an 18K piece is worth 75% of the pure-gold price for the same weight.
Why do different websites show different gold prices?
They may show different data types (live spot, LBMA benchmark, futures settlement), different timestamps, or bid versus ask prices. MarketsGrid states the data type, the observation time and the sources reconciled for every quote.
Is the gold price shown here a buy or sell price?
It is a market reference price, not a dealer quote. Dealers add a premium above spot when selling and pay below spot when buying; the spread depends on the product and dealer.
