About the platinum price

Platinum is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. Its largest use is in catalytic converters for diesel and, increasingly, petrol vehicles, followed by jewellery and industrial applications; supply is concentrated in South Africa and Russia.

For most of the 20th century platinum traded above gold; since about 2015 it has usually traded at a discount, largely because diesel demand fell while gold benefited from investment demand.

What moves the platinum price

Automotive demand, substitution between platinum and palladium in catalysts, South African mine supply and power constraints, and investment demand are the main drivers. Hydrogen fuel cells are a longer-term source of demand.

Frequently asked

Why is platinum cheaper than gold?
Platinum demand is dominated by the automotive industry rather than investment; when diesel car sales fell after 2015, platinum lost a major buyer while gold gained from central-bank and investor demand.
