How the Time Machine works
The price “on a date” is the last stored observation on or before that date (a nearby observation is used, and labelled, when the exact date has no data — for example weekends, or years covered only by monthly averages). Returns compare that value with the latest available price; the annualised figure is a compound growth rate. Currency conversions use the ECB reference rate in force on each date, and inflation adjustment uses the consumer price index matching the currency (US CPI for dollars, UK CPI for pounds, euro-area HICP for euros).
