Where the prices come from
- Precious metals: Gold-API.com real-time spot, voted against CNBC spot and TradingView; COMEX/NYMEX futures act as referee when two sources disagree.
- Energy, indices, FX, ETFs and crypto: CNBC and Yahoo Finance must agree within a tight tolerance; TradingView real-time streams are used where they track the same instrument, and Google Finance breaks ties.
- Interest rates and inflation: the issuing institutions themselves — the Federal Reserve, ECB, Bank of England, Reserve Bank of Australia, US Treasury, BLS, ONS, Eurostat, Statistics Canada and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
A price that cannot be confirmed is never shown as current: the page keeps the last verified value and labels it. See the data sources page for licences and update schedules.
How status is determined
Every market price is cross-checked against independent sources and shown as current only when they agree within a tolerance set for that market. 3 sources agree and 2 sources agree mean the price was confirmed; 2 of 3 sources agree means one source was out of line and was outvoted; Official source marks rates and inflation published by the issuing institution. Live prices are seconds old; 10-min delayed marks exchange futures that are only available on a delay; Last trade / close means the market is closed or has not traded recently.
