About this series

Australia's Consumer Price Index measures price changes for a representative basket across the eight capital cities. MarketsGrid uses the all-groups original index published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and currently rebased to 2025 = 100.

The headline annual inflation rate compares the latest quarterly index with the same quarter a year earlier. This is different from the quarter-to-quarter move and from the RBA's preferred trimmed-mean measure.

Inflation, cash rates and gold in AUD

The RBA considers inflation alongside labour-market and activity data when setting the cash rate. For an Australian investor, gold's AUD return combines the USD gold move with the AUD/USD exchange-rate move; the real return then removes Australian CPI inflation.

Frequently asked

How often is Australian CPI updated?
This all-groups series is quarterly. It is an official index, not a live estimate, and its observation date represents the quarter rather than the release timestamp.
