About the copper price
The live copper price is the COMEX front-month futures contract, quoted in US dollars per pound and shown here per metric ton (1 metric ton = 2,204.62 pounds); it is published only when two market sources agree and is delayed about 10 minutes. The long-run history is the World Bank's monthly average of the LME cash price for grade A cathode, in dollars per metric ton.
Copper is a bellwether for global industrial activity and a key input for electrification.
Frequently asked
- How do I convert the copper price per ton to per pound?
- Divide the price per metric ton by 2,204.62. A price of $10,000 per metric ton is about $4.54 per pound. COMEX quotes copper per pound; the LME quotes it per metric ton.
- Why does the live price differ from the monthly history?
- The live figure is the front-month COMEX futures price, while the history is the monthly average of the LME cash price. Futures and cash prices differ slightly, and a monthly average smooths the daily moves.
