How the value is calculated

Value = weight in troy ounces × purity × spot price per troy ounce. Weight in grams is divided by 31.1034768 to get troy ounces; purity is the karat divided by 24 (18K = 0.75) or the hallmark fineness (750 = 0.750).

The result is the melt value of the metal content. A dealer buying scrap typically pays 70–95% of melt depending on quantity and refining costs; finished jewellery sells above melt because of design and retail margins.

Worked example

A 14K ring weighing 8 grams contains 8 × 0.5833 = 4.667 g of pure gold, or 0.1500 troy ounces. At a gold price of $4,000 per ounce its metal value is $600. Stones, clasps and plating add no gold value and should be excluded from the weight.
