About the us dollar index (dxy) price
The ICE US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the dollar against six currencies: the euro (57.6% of the index), the Japanese yen (13.6%), the British pound (11.9%), the Canadian dollar (9.1%), the Swedish krona (4.2%) and the Swiss franc (3.6%). It started at 100 in March 1973. The live level is published only when two market feeds agree.
Why the dollar index matters for gold
Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar makes it more expensive for buyers using other currencies and often weighs on the price; the gold vs dollar index comparison shows how closely they have moved in opposite directions over different periods.
Frequently asked
- Why does the euro dominate the dollar index?
- The index weights were fixed when the euro replaced several European currencies in 1999 and have not changed since, so the euro alone is 57.6% of the DXY. A broad trade-weighted dollar index would weight China and Mexico much more heavily.
