About the silver price

Silver is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. It is both a precious and an industrial metal: roughly half of annual demand comes from industry, notably solar panels, electronics and electrical contacts, which makes it more cyclical and more volatile than gold.

Sterling silver is 92.5% silver (hallmark 925); investment bars and coins are 999 fine. The gold/silver ratio — how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold — is a widely followed relative-value gauge.

What moves the silver price

Silver follows gold's macro drivers — real yields, the dollar and safe-haven demand — but with a higher beta, so it usually rises and falls faster. Industrial demand ties it to manufacturing cycles and the pace of solar installations, while a large part of supply is a by-product of copper, lead and zinc mining and responds slowly to price.

Because the market is smaller than gold's, investment flows into and out of ETFs and coins can move the price sharply, and silver has historically recorded larger drawdowns and larger rallies than gold.

How to read the numbers on this page

Silver's history on MarketsGrid runs monthly from 1960 (London fix averages, then spot averages) and daily where a daily source is configured. Volatility and drawdown figures are computed from those stored observations, not estimated.

Frequently asked

What is the gold/silver ratio and why does it matter?
It is the gold price divided by the silver price. A high ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold by historical standards; some investors use extremes to switch between the two metals. See the dedicated ratio page for its full history since 1960.
Why is silver more volatile than gold?
Its market is far smaller, and around half of demand is industrial, so it reacts to both investment flows and the manufacturing cycle.
