About the palladium price

Palladium is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. About four-fifths of demand comes from catalytic converters in petrol vehicles, so the price is tightly linked to car production, emissions rules and substitution with platinum. Russia and South Africa supply most of the world's palladium.

What moves the palladium price

Automotive production and emissions standards, substitution toward cheaper platinum, the shift to electric vehicles (which use no catalyst), and supply disruptions in Russia or South Africa. The market is thin, which produces large swings: palladium rose several-fold between 2016 and 2021 and then gave most of it back.
