How the value is calculated

Value = weight in troy ounces × fineness × silver price per troy ounce. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver (hallmark 925); pre-1965 US coins are 90%; fine bullion is 999.

Silver is heavy relative to its value, so small errors in weight matter less than for gold — but purity matters a lot: plated items (EPNS, 'silver plate') contain almost no silver.
