About the ishares gold trust price
This exchange-traded fund trades like a share on NYSE Arca during US market hours. The headline level is published only when two market feeds agree (Yahoo Finance and CNBC, with Google Finance as a tie-breaker). History is the daily close.
ETF price versus the metal price
A physically backed metal ETF holds bars in a vault, and each share represents a fixed but slowly shrinking amount of metal: the fund sells a little metal each year to pay its expense ratio. The share price therefore tracks the metal price closely but drifts below it over time. Shares trade only during US market hours, while gold and silver trade almost around the clock.
Frequently asked
- Is buying an ETF the same as owning gold?
- Economically close, legally different: you own shares of a trust that owns the metal, not the metal itself, and you pay an annual expense ratio. In return there are no storage costs of your own and the shares can be sold instantly during market hours.
